A54 Congleton to Buxton

I am planning to use the above route this weekend. It's not a road I have used before and would appreciate any comments on whether it is suitable for a car and caravan or whether I should look for an alternative. The only other option seems to be going up to Stockport and using the A6 .
comments greatly appreciated

Just had a look on Google maps, & even though it's an 'A' road it does look a bit tight & hilly in places as you will see from this screen shot...http://goo.gl/maps/mJ35o
Have you thought about using the A53 from Leek ??

Many thanks for your response. As I feared, the A54 looks to be too narrow for a stress-free journey. I have decided to go via Macclesfied instead as that route appears to be a better bet
