Hello all, I am very new to caravanning after very kindly being given a 1988 Abbey in excellent condition!

I have a number of questions that I am hoping for advice on please...

1) Awning light - what is the best way of getting light into the awning? Running an extension lead through a window seems obvious, but is there a better way?

2) Electrics - Can I safely plug in numerous things via extension sockets or is there a limit?

3) Electrics (2) - Fuses, there are currently glass fuses that I've never seen before, should I replace like for like? Where do I get them from? Do I need to stick to the 7.5amp it says?

4) Water - Do I need to add purification powder to the water in the tank or will it be safe to drink?

5) Battery - When running from the mains, should I attach the battery or leave it loose?

6) The front locker leaks - can I reseal it myself or will it be a specialist job?

Thanks, now I'm going to search this site for tips on what to pack etc!

1. There should be an awning light built in on the side of the van, for more light an extension is ok, you may have an external mains socket in one of the lockers, usually the wet locker on the side wall as you open it.

2. NO, you cannot just plug as many things as you like in.

The site power supply you plug into will have a maximum amperage limit, some are 10 amps, some are 16 amps, and some are as low as 6 amps.

You need to add up the total amount of power you wil be using , remember the electric fire fited inside the van will draw 2000w on high power, which is 8 amps on its own .

3. You MUST keep to the recommended fuse ratings,you must NEVER increase them,.

New glass fuses can be got at Maplins or any good caravan dealer.

4 Flush your water system through with Milton (use as the maker directs regarding strength) diluted in theaquaroll, leave for 2 hours then flush with 2 full aquarolls of water.{pipe delimiter}

Replace any filter which may be fitted .

5 Keep the battery connected, that way it will keep charged and if you have a mains power cut you still have some power for lights, pump and toilet flush, and heater fan.

6 The front locker is not sealed.(if you mean the gas locker).
