On our local news a man got 32 years for a murder in Cumbria area. While those pair that murdered their young daughter also got hefty sentences. Well done 👏 judge's it is about time.
Yet attacks on MPs are not treated equally. Jo Cox died . Yet the miscreant against a Clacton MP walked🙀On our local news a man got 32 years for a murder in Cumbria area. While those pair that murdered their young daughter also got hefty sentences. Well done 👏 judge's it is about time.
But the attack in Clacton was only throwing a substance. Whilst I don’t condone it, there’s no comparison with Jo Cox’s murder. John Prescott knew how to dish out swift justice to those that throw messy substances. That miscreant wasn’t even charged for throwing the egg.Yet attacks on MPs are not treated equally. He wasn't an MP at the time.Yet attacks on MPs are not treated equally. Jo Cox died . Yet the miscreant against a Clacton MP walked🙀
Minimum sentences imposed as part of a life sentence are just that, an absolute minimum - it's the earliest possible point at which they can apply for parole - in the case of Urfan Shariff who got a life sentence with a minimum of 40 years, he'll be 83 before he can apply. It's quite possible he'll get a hard time in prison from the other inmates. What is the point in giving long sentences and then letting them walk free several years or even months later? Prison is probably like home from home. Not exactly a good deterrent!
Agreed, but we have all seen what happened recently!Minimum sentences imposed as part of a life sentence are just that, an absolute minimum - it's the earliest possible point at which they can apply for parole - in the case of Urfan Shariff who got a life sentence with a minimum of 40 years, he'll be 83 before he can apply. Not with minimum sentences unless the time period had been served. I wonder though why as a proportion of the population Britain has the highest percentage prison population in Europe by a fair margin. Are we not getting something right?Agreed, but we have all seen what happened recently!
It seems that according to various sources quite a large proportion are not originally from this country? Just going by what I have read as have no idea myself. Not with minimum sentences unless the time period had been served. What if the substance had been acid as we have seen before? But the attack in Clacton was only throwing a substance. Whilst I don’t condone it, there’s no comparison with Jo Cox’s murder. More to it than stealing a mobile phone.Apart from very serious crimes like murder and extreme violence prison is not the answer.
There is one prisoner who has been locked up under IPP for 11 years so far, his crime, stealing a mobile phone.
That does nothing for either him or society.
Not to mention the chronic underfunding of the justice system.
The system is completely broken.
Agreed, the bloke has psychosis and should be in hospital not prison.More to it than stealing a mobile phone.
Same as I pads have nowt to do with caravanning.I am very concerned that certain specific cases are being disclosed or discussed where its very unlikely the reasons behind the sentencing are not understood or are being cherry picked for sensationalist comment. I ask the Mods to consider if this discussion is appropriate for the "General" topic area because as far as I can see it has nothing to do caravanning.
If it had been acid then I’m certain the courts would have given a more appropriate sentence. It’s just hypothesising “what ifs”.What if the substance had been acid as we have seen before?
The reference to Jo Cox was merely demonstrating that anyone unknown may present a life changing danger to some one in the public domain..
I accept there are always a lot of “what ifs “but as we all know it’s always wise after the event 😉
