Additional electric sockets.

Hi
Just a small question, i was thinking of adding another 240v socket in the van and was wondering if this would void the waranty? As would not be the dealer doing the work.

I would check with the dealer / manufacturer, it may be ok if carried out by a qualified electrician but worth checking first. If it is ok try and get it in writing just in case they deny it at a leter date..................

Hello Dougie,

The addition of a properly(1) wired socket cannot void the warranty, as your warranty exists between you and the seller and only relates to the condition of the caravan at the point of sale.

It may however affect your manufacture guarantee.

The only way you can establish that is to ask the owner of guarantee, in this case the caravan manufacturer.

(1) A properly wired additional socket will take into account all the relevant regulations and wiring practices. If you are not fully conversant with these regulations you must refer the job to a professional.

fit the extra socket but "connect it" to the mains via a three pin plug then its just an extension lead

Most manufacturers are vey good regarding the fitting of various additional items, but itis worth checking with them first.
The general "rule" applied is that any damage caused by the fitting or use of such an additional item is not covered under their warranty or guarantee.
The item must be fitted correctly, and for an electrical item you would need a Minor Works Certificate to prove that it has been fitted correctly and is safe to use.

We plug in an extension lead in the outside socket and run it in through the end window (kitchen) to plug the hot plate in works well

We have a 2010 Swift 570 and I wanted to add a socket under the double bed for a machine that helps me with sleep apnoea. I had a look around the van and identified the mains circuit that I wanted to break into which has in-line connectors of a style I had never seen before. I contacted Swift and they in turn referred me to Sargent Electrical Services who make the wiring harnesses for Swift.

They were an absolute joy to deal with. They asked me to measure how long the cable run would need to be and then gave me a quote for the supply of a new socket pre-wired with cable tails that had the in-line connectors on them. A few days later I was the proud owner of a socket with 2 x 3 Metre tails which was dead easy to plug into the existing circuit. Cost me about £18 I seem to recall - they apologised profusely that the carriage and VAT made up about £10 of that simply because it was their contracted carrier's minimum charge. I was very happy with the service and price.

So if you have a Swift it might be worth talking to Sargents. Otherwise it might be worth a quick call to your dealer or manufacturer's customer service team.
