First of all have a look around at as many vans as you can at dealers, to get an idea of which layout you might like. Also bear in mind that when the kids grow up they prefer to leave the fold and do their own thing, so you could in a couple of years be looking more at three rather than four, or even just the two of you if they stay at friends/relatives.

It is a good idea to try a much cheaper van first but for that I'd purchase a cheap private sale van, as your going to loose less when you come to sell.

Dealers don't always offer the best deals, but unless you've got a very knowledgable caravanning mate who can sniff out the dodgey vans, you would be best advised to use a dealer as you have recoarse should thigs go pear shaped.

If using a dealer, don't be afraid to play hard ball on the price and be prepared to walk away from a deal if they won't budge on price.

18 months ago, we bought a 2005 Abbey freestyle 540 fixed bed van. But before we settled on the layout and that particular van, we'd been round a dozen dealers and seen upwards of 50 vans. We even looked at a brand new fleetwood that was "lost at the fatory " for a year before it was registered. But settled on a 3 year old van instead. I knocked
