Advice needed from dog qwners

Hi all..

Help needed regarding my young Lab(9mths)he is a joy to have apart from when travelling in the car, where he gets so excited that we have a constant whinning and yapping. We have read that Bach flower remedies could help, anybody had any experience about them or anything else...Gary

Hi Gary

I have used Bach flower waters in the past when I first started showing one of my dogs. He used to get a bit nervous believe it or not (six months onwards). I just put a few drops on his tongue 15 minutes before we went in. I'd say it worked.

You can get all different types for different problems. I used Larch. Rescue Remedy is the most popular and comes in droplets or spray. However, I believe you have a training issue on your hands which will need a little bit of work.

Regarding your dog, make sure he's secure and can't freely move around in the car, I use dog car harnesses or seat belts. Secondly, when you are about to put him in the car, do so without any fuss whatsoever. I'd take him out on dummy runs to get him used to it.

There is a process where you put dog in the car, start engine, if the dog whines etc, you take it out of the car and back in the house and so on and so on. I do know people who have used this method successfully. You must remain calm and confident throughout.

What ever you do, don't praise or reward unacceptable behaviour (whining and yapping) by acknowledging it through voice and inappropriate body language.

Hope that helps.

Have a look at the Dap spray, just type in the search bar DAP spray, we always found this good, also good for fear of fireworks.

Gary (York),

We had terrible problems with our dog in the car. She would not settle no matter what we did.

Dog's Trust suggested we got a large cage for the rear of the Shogun. One large enough for her to stand up and easily turn round in. At first we took her short distances and then left her in the car with some toys and biscuits for say 20 to 30 minutes at a time.

We called her cage her "den". Within a few weeks we just say come on in your den and she is really happy.

Hi Gary,

When our dog was a puppy she would hate the car, everytime she got in she would cry and bark and howl which was painful to listen to.

We were then advised to buy a dog cage and put some things from the house into it e.g. dogs blanket and favourite toy.

She would refuse to jump up into the car which was a land rover discovery and she was too heavy to carry, so we would bribe her into the car with dog treats which we didn't want to do.

The cage helped with the howling she would only do it for the first 5 mins of the journey. As soon as she would stop we would praise her with treats.

Every evening we would take her on dummy rides just to get her used to it.

Now she loves the car so much that when we arrive on the caravan site she refuses to come out of her bed until she has had a good look around first.

Best of luck

Ian
