Aerial Swap

Can anyone tell me please, can I replace my 'round' Status aeriel with the Status directional without to much fuss.

Or do have to cut out a larger hole in the caravan roof etc etc.

As we all know the round ones are slightly better than useless.

Why do caravan manufactures still keep installing them is beyond me.

Thanks for any help given

Eric

Eric,

Yes you can replace it easily if you have room inside the van to accept the extended pole as it comes through the roof.

You will need to enlarge the hole to accept the aerial pole but with care, should not be too difficult.

Hi Eric,

Quote "As we all know the round ones are slightly better than useless. Why do caravan manufacturers still keep installing them is beyond me."

Because it ticks one box for the new owner - does this make of caravan have a TV aerial?

The UK caravan market is driven by cosmetic features, such as: easily discernible new model graphics (I have the 2008 model one-upmanship) - colour of interior - carpets - curved foam seating that doesn't make a great bed - and so on.

Just take a look through a series of brochures - and notice the new "features" for each model year - and now apply your experience as a caravanner to these features.

This is a standard technique in professional selling - giving people a long list of things to tick off to help them make the purchase decision, and these must be things that either look good in the showroom or are a "this van has that too" feature so the van is not excluded.

This approach sells vans in the UK market, rather than any hidden improvements to quality - like improved build quality, sensible nose-weights, improved stability. But that's probably only something you look for after a few "unhappy" purchases.

To be fair, the mushrooms do work in strong signal areas where there is little multi-path distortion too - so yes you do have a functioning aerial. And them you can buy the real one as an accessory purchase later on.

My friend has just got a new Bailey caravan and I he has the Short pole version of the directional status aerial.

I measured that it needed 14" clearance from the ceiling inside the overhead locker for its pole.

I too have the round one which is useless on most sites and am about to change it, the problem I have is my lockers are not as tall as his in the new Bailey so i will have to fit in the large cupboard above the heater and use a blanking plate over the old round aerial, my only worry is that the new aerial will be close to the flue for the heater that comes throught the roof the instructions that come with the direction aerial says that mounting next to other objects in close proximity might affect the signal received.

hi alexander

I had the same problem when changing the 315 mushroom as mine would not pickup digital tv I found a solution was to blank of the old fittment with a blanking plate

We too use an external 530 on a jockey wheel mounted pole but may, at some time, replace it with a 530/5, just for the convenience of use.
