Thanks guys......
I re-packed on my lawn yesterday and sucked out from all three air beams in turn closing the valves as I went, result package was half the size as our initial effort. Guess our first attempt was made in the general haste of packing up and leaving so all OK now.
Still don't fathom the webbing straps but as they are not in the way will continue to ignore these.
Cheers to all....

Paul the webbing straps you can peg these down as it makes the awning taught.Did you manage to find that the black bung was for inflating and deflating? Good luck next time out and dont forget to open any interior valves next time time you set up.

The same webbing straps we had on tents years ago, and we normally use the dome headed mushroom pegs just to hold them down. They are more of a retainer and help you to get the right shape and tension. there is no real need to peg them.
