Air Con

Can anyone tell me about air conditioning in caravan's. Ive got a three year old coachman 540/4/vip with air con as standard but when on maximum cold and left for a while the van doesn't get that cold. surely it would be like walking into a fridge when left on for a couple of hours

Hi Davie, I think you will find if you read the tech sheet for the air-con unit that it will only cool the van so many degrees below the ambient temperature.

Davie

What make and model is it?

I have one in the bailey and it cools down enough on a hot day to make you want to put a coat on. Yours may need a service or just the filters cleaned

i do keep the windows and doors shut, ive been investigating aside fro the forum and apparantly i may need the unit re-gassing

regards

Dave, If it needs re-gassing, then you need to fix the leak first, usually these are sealed units and you lose some compressor oil too, if you have a leak - see if you can look inside and see if you can see oil around any components - if you can then you have a leak - if not you may have blocked inlet filters - these are usually screen type and can be washed to clean.

Most air conditioning units will normally work down to a temperature of around 17c, so if you have an outside ambient temperature of 28c you can cool the van down to around 17c, I might be wrong but I do not think they will start cooling when the outside ambient is below that figure, as it is already cool enough outside I think, if that makes any sense.
