We are about to buy our first caravan after selling our motorhome and would like to ask you caravaners is it worth buying a caravan with airconditoning or is it a expense not worth spending we do not intend going abroad during summer months

For the amount of time it would sit idle, just reducing the payload allowance, I personally would not bother.

It is also a piece of equipment which needs regular, specialist maintainence to avoid the possibility of Legionaires.

Even in hot weather in this country, which is not very often, we have found a tower fan adequate to keep the inside of the van comfortable for us and the dogs, without the noise from most aircon systems.

We have always had a caravan with air conditioning as standard and, as we do caravan from mid to south France during summer months we would not like to do without it. However, if we only holiday'd in this country and it was an optional extra we would certainly not go to the expense of having it fitted.

Yet again we have people giving incorrect information out !.

The airconditioning system used in caravans is the same as most domestic / commercial systems in that the condenser is "air cooled", in no way can an air cooled condenser cause the leggionaire bug.

Where people are going wrong is in the sensationalist press reports that blame "airconditioning systems" as the cause of leggionaire outbreaks every time we have one.

The problem with the bug is it grows and lives in warm stagnant water as found in poorly maintained water cooled condensers, not just airconditioning condensers but anything that relies on water to cool it and does not receive regular maintenance electricity cooling towers being one example, process plants being another.

The only water you will get with an air-cooled airconditioning system is the condensate from the evaporator, this is only a small amount (depends on the ambient temperature and humidity)and as long as the drain is kept clear the water will allways run away to ground.

Our coachman laser had a/c fitted and we too at the time thought we didnt need it but now we have a coachman vip without a/c and we miss it, our next van will be fitted with it.
