AL-KO Brake Adjustment

Hi chaps,

Just a quick, simple question .....

I have a 2003 Swift Charisma 560 and I'm looking to adjust my brakes. On the back of the wheel hub there are two or three green plastic plugs. I presume the plug closest to the rim is an inspection port to look at the lining thickness, and the plug furthest from the rim is the star wheel adjuster port?

Excuse my ignorance, but my van is kept in storage so I can't readily check if there are 2 or 3 plugs per wheel. Any helpers? Obviously, I can check next time I'm at my van, but I'm just wondering ??

Thanks Ian

cheers. Looks like there should be 2 inspection bungs for the brake shoes (saw a thread from another site that said there will only be one).

The brake adjuster on my 2004 can be identified by the direction arrow engraved adjacent the hole.

Don't worry about prising the wrong bung out, the green type i have just push back in.

ok Ray, out of interest, how many bungs do you have per wheel? 1 for the starwheel and 1 or 2 for inspecting the shoes (if any for shoe inspection??)

The Al-Ko brake back plate has two green bungs covering the inspection hole and the shoe adjuster star wheel.

The outer bung on the lower edge is the inspection port, the inner(closer to the axle) is the star wheel adjuster.

The bungs just need easing out with a small flat bladed screwdriver and push back in with a thumb.

The inspection port only gives a view(if you can get your head in a position to actually see through it) of about 1/2 inch of one edge of the lower pad, you cannot see all the pad on both shoes.

The star wheel adjuster should be adjusted until the drum will not rotate then backed off 3 clicks.

When adjusting turn the wheel/drum in the FORWARD direction ONLY.

DO NOT under any circumstances turn it in the reverse direction.
