I've just purchased a wheel carrier and have tried fitting it to my Fleetwood Garland. It goes into the Al-Ko frame perfectly but for some reason Fleetwood had decided to put a wooden cross member in line with where the tyre will be. Has/Can these cross members be moved without causing any problems to the caravan structure ?

Don't forget that you need to allow the carrier to be removed completely and re-fitted from the other side if you are touring on the continent. It simply isn't safe to remove the spare wheel to the left when driving on the "wrong side".

Avondale's central internal compartment for the spae wheel is so much better than Al-Ko's.

It may not be safe to remove the spare wheel from the wrong side but its inevitable that it will be on the wrong side as changing over on the ferry is not a common site. The unit is heavy and awkward at the best of times and changing at the port of embarkation is also a sight I have never witnessed.

The Avondale system is indeed praiseworthy but of little help to Jon who has a Fleetwood.

Jon please let us know how you resolve the problem as I am sure it affects other Fleetwood owners

I'd recommend that you contact Fleetwood on 01787 378705 before removing all or part of the crossmember that's in the way. It's probably there for some vital structural purpose.
