Hi

This sunday Aldi are offering a complete digital mini satellite system with a 3 year warranty for £49.99. Claimed to receive up to 3,500 channels. Made by Tevion the spec looks very impressive, has any member had any experience of one of these systems. All I want to receive is freeview I am not interested in Sky or any pay channels etc. I think we pay enough already via the TV licence.

I would also like to find out if it would work in Spain around the Barcelona area.

John, with any of the mini satellite systems, such as the one you have mentioned and the Maplins one, they will only get Free To Air stations, and not Freeview.

With FTA you cannot get Ch4 or 5 as they are encrypted due to the licence deal they are tied into at the moment.

To get freeview, contrary to its name, you have to pay , either for a freeview box, or a freeview card for the sky box.

The Aldi system is very good value for money and almost identical to the satellite suitcase I have.

CH4 and CH5 will become FTA in the next few years.

I have not used it in Spain but I have read comments from people who have been able to receive channels normally, if you have doubts you cold always take a bigger dish.

I think there probably are 3500 FTA channels over the three satellite bearings but on Astra2 I receive approximately 90 watchable channels once you have ruled out foreign language, shopping and religious programs, if you take out music, news and specialist channels you have around 50.

You can also pick your local home stations to watch abroad or in another part of the country.

With our Silvercrest (lidl) we get all the stations as far as southern Brittany, Holland ,up to the Rhine but when in Dresden Germany we only got foreign stations, this is because the small dish they sell ,however the 500mm dish is ok but have not tried it in Spain yet.

Sarah, make sure the dish is almost vertical and pointing South and slightly to the East. It takes some time for the receiver to get the signal and register on the screen so move the dish slightly and wait a couple of secs to see if you are aligned. It just takes a bit of time until you get it set up, then you can mark the compass thing for future use.

Graeme.
