alternative Battery

evening all just got the van out of storage and the battery has seen better days leaked on the - terminal as we are leaving in the morning
will it be ok to use a new deep cycle battery which is meant for my Kuga 90 amp and is for stop/start vehicles will it be any different or cause any problems/damage/safety with the vans systems it will only for a 4 nights away and on my return will look for suitable one

Doubt it will be a problem. Some AGM chargers give a different program for that sort of battery. But my smart charger has no such niceties. And charges all types of battery without a problem.

It may well be best to use a specialist charger for each battery, but best does not mean its necessary.

cheers John i know i have to reset the battery management sys on the car but as far is i am aware the only difference is the cold cranks ?

I have a sneaky suspicion it'll be better than a leisure battery! Quality of batteries varies widely -we had a Yuasa car battery in our first caravan-second hand when we bought it and still moving the caravan happily around 3 years later when we sold it! Mind it was on a permanent trickle charge in the winter.

I have Yuasa batteries on one of my mobility scooter and still going strong

An AGM battery required a different type of charger. Also a AGM battery will recover from being as low as 5v.
A stop start battery was incorrectly fitted to my Jeep and did not notice any different.

Some chargers like the Ctek are okay to use but I have been told that many lead acid chargers are not suitable to recharge an AGM battery. A Google shows that basically it should not be done.

I guess that modem chargers have the inbuilt electronics to discriminate, mine does not allow switching between battery types, (except 6volt and 12 volt) so it must be automatic. The danger is using old fashioned simple dumb chargers particularly if they are powerful ones.

thanks all for the reply all set up and beer time the battery is a varta 90am s/s it for the kuga. but I will monitor for the next few day got my multimeter the charger is the standard one bailey fitted as we are on hook up so need to worry but the van must have a battery fitted when in use again thanks

SS battery prices are significantly more expensive than standard starter batteries.

Varta are superb-standard fit on BMW and Mini and 7 years old in our Roadster.

Our Buc battery is AGM-the Truma solar controller has a specific setting for it that am assuming it was set at by the dealer-not got round to checking yet-and assume the van battery copes as it never seems lacking in welly!
