...or has anyone else made the same mistake?

I have managed to travel about 400 miles to the Dordogne, with the cable from the car to my new caravan having dragged along the road.

The result is the wires have been completely burnt through by the friction.

I nievely hoped that connecting them back together would get all my brake lights etc working again, but no joy.

What can I do, I need to travel home to the UK on Tuesday.

I have found a French caravan shop that has offered to do a temporary repair for E180.

Thanks in advance

Garry if the cable is long enough can you not cut it and re fit the plug. if not cut the wire where it has burnt through and do a temp repair using a electrical connection block or using eletricians tape but make sure its well insulated

Trev, many thanks. I have tried this option connecting the 12 leads using a block connector. However when I connect the car to the van nothing happens. Light do not function and ALKO light does not come on.

I have also tried replacing the relevant fuse!

I am worried I may have done something more serious.

I'd double check the earth wirs connections too, strip connector isn't as east as it looks to get a good connection.

Failing that can you buy a trailer board localy?

180euro is alot of money!

If all the lights on the car are working then its the connection of the cable. you need to trace the connection and check all the fuses notjust the ones on the van but the car ones and there should be shorting fuses that have been put on when the tow bar war fitted. if you find these you should be sorted as it would be one of those that has gone

Garry - I would think it's unlikely that fuses in the caravan have blown, or any damage to the caravan electrics. Any shorting would have blown fuses in the car, where the source of power is coming from. You need to check the individual connections in the car socket ( I take it you have the new 13 pin one?) with a meter or a test lamp. If you don't have these you could make up a test lamp with a bulb and a piece of twin cable.

We all make these mistakes - don't blame yourself
