We're 2 families with 6 kids between us aged from 4 - 12 and we're considering going to Anglesey at SBH. Any site recommendations please? Must have decent toilet/shower facilities, EHU and must take dogs!

Also, does anyone know what the roads are like to get there (travelling from Sheffield) as we're new to towing and our friends will have a new twin axle that they'll still be getting used to.

Thanks in anticipation

If I remember correctly the North Wales coast road is dual caradgeway from Chester.

Then the A5 to Hollyhead is dual track as well.

Dont forget that this is a main route to the docks at Hollyhead to cross over to Ireland

Hi Claire and Rob,

There are two caravan club sites on Angelsey, one with full facilities, and one without. they are only about half a mile apart. The full facility site is excellent, usual Caravan Club standards. I live near Porthmadog and have visited caravanning friends on this site.

The journey from Sheffield is easy. We often tow our Twin axle Swift Conqueror from here to Chatsworth C.C.site.

The way we tow is Baslow,Buxton ,Macclesfield,Knutsford then onto the A556,A54,A51,A55 all the way onto Angelsey.

Then good directions in site handbook.

Site gets busy at Spring Bank so if interested book asap.

Hi Claire & Rob

Two years ago we stayed at a lovely site on Anglesey.

The facilities were first class with plenty to do for the kids including an indoor kids play room etc.

The roads were first class and never caused us any problems.

See " www.homefarm-anglesey.co.uk".

It is one of the Best of British Parks members.

Cheers

Hi

We stopped at the cc site Penrhos on Anglesey a few years ago with 3 kids at Easter. The other cc site doesn't have the same facilities, no toilet block. Site usual cc standards, nice site, has a childrens play area. You can explore Anglesey, the North Wales coast, Ssnowdonia. We also took the car over to Ireland, to Dublin for the day, booked on line and got a good deal. Hubby was talking about returning back to the site possibly later this year.

The roads from Chester to Anglesey are dual carriageway. A couple of things to be aware of, the North Wales police have historically had a reputation for liking speed cameras. The route from Chester to Anglesey is the coast road, to Holyhead and the ferries. The coast road near Conway can get busy on bank holidays, we got stuck in traffic on Good Friday, nothing you can do about it,its just something to be aware of when planning your journey. Its not as bad I have to say as the road from the M1 to Sheffield along the Parkway in rush hour.

Hope this helps

Hi Claire and Rob

We live in the North West and travel into Wales quite a lot with our 'van. I'm not sure of the route from Sheffield to M6. Once you reach the M6 take the M56 towards Chester. It is possible to go around Chester on the South or North sides. To go south turn off on the M53 and then that becomes the A55, north Wales express way. The A55 leads all the way to near the Menai Bridge to Anglesey. It becomes the A5 just before the bridge.

Alternately to go the north of Chester go to the end of the M56 and then follow the signs for Queensferry/North Wales and take the A5117,A550 and A594 to join up with the A55 and then the route is as the south of Chester route. Either way around Chester is good and dual carraigeway when not motorway. I just listen to the traffic announcements as I travel down the M56 and choose the best route from that.

All of the A55 is a very high quality road, mainly dual carraigeway and with lovely sea and country view along much of its route. It is an excellent road for towing as it bypasses all the towns and villages enroute. It does, however, get very busy at peak times, eg, Bank Holidays and it the major route for hgv traffic to the boat at Holyhead.

On Anglesey I would recommend Ystad Parc Lodge at Cemaes Bay. It is quite a basic site but has lovely views over the coast and its own small beach and lots of space for your kids and dog to play. The owner Lizzie is a lovely person - she gave me a bottle of wine because I recommended the site to another camper who was looking for a site!! The village of Cemaes Bay has a good range of small shops and pubs and lots of lovely walks.

You can see reviews of the site here

UKcampsite is an excellent website too with lots of reviews of sites on Anglesey if you don't fancy Ystad Lodge.

Hope you find somewhere good and have a lovely time.

Thanks all who've offered advice/recommendations. You've really put our minds at rest re route. Just waiting now as friend's Dad is having a hip replacement so got to wait for the good old NHS to let him know when they can do it to see if they can come or not. Hope they don't keep him waiting too long as know sites will be busy at SBH - CC Site already full.
