Annoying "knocking" when it`s windy.

Was lying in bed in Portrush this weekend, at the air show, and the wind got up, and all night there was an intermittent "knocking".
At first I thought itwas the hinged flap above the water inlet, got out of bed, and secured it, but still the knocking continued.
It was as if a flap was lifting, then dropping when the wind gusted.
I eventually tracked it down to an area behind the fridge/cooker area.
Am considering taking out the fridge, and cooker, as the noise drove me crackers.
Any one with any idea what this could be?

are you sure its not a cable, such as a coax from an external tv mast or some such?

tracing strange noises can be the hardest thing to do and often the simplest to cure when found you dont state the age/type of your van or wether you had a awning erected or not.
it is doubtful that any noise from the wind could come from the cooker as the back is sealed from the outside with no moving parts, is likely that any noise would come from the fridge as there are 2 large vents on the outside " assuming the van/fridge is of a modern design" for air flow these can be removed from the outside via the dutz clips by turing with a screwdriver you should be able to inspect the back of the fridge through these look for loose cables ect and secure with tiewraps this would not be a problem if the vents were on the side where the awning goes as the wind could not get in .

older fridges like the electolux rm212 had no large vents on the outside just a square alloy cover on the vent this type of fridge does have a flap in the vent pipe to prevent the wind blowing out the light on gas we had one of these on the motor home and it drove us nuts if the wind was in a certain direction.
anyway let us know what you find as there are other thing that could cause such a noise with a bit more info I am sure someone could help.

When it is windy I get a quiet but annoying noise from the fridge vent. Mine is a 2005 Swift van. On investigation i found that the filter (fly screen or whatever it is) inside the vent moved in the wind. Blu-tac or similar sorts that one.

Anthony, I had a similar problem on my sprite major 6. I too traced the noise to behind the fridge. In my case it was the mesh filters that can be found behind the fridge vents on the outside of the caravan. The vents are not held in place with anything and it allows them to rattle back and forth when it's windy. I simply blu tacked them in place and I could sleep again! If you remove the fridge vents you will see what I mean.

Thanks for all the ideas, seems it could be the vent`s alright.
For you info I have a 2008, ace jubilee courier.
And at the time of rattling, no awning, cables etc.

Thanks very much again, it will save me hours of hoaking about.

glad to be of help, its funny reading the later posts as one of the suggestions I was going to make was checking the looseness of the dust screens behind the vents when removed if the fridge was of that type and no awning was erected.
