Times must be bad?
My engineer of ten plus years rang me to book the annual service next February. That’s a first ever.
He admitted a lot of his regulars have given up caravanning and not many new ones are coming on board.

I wonder how many are doing the same as us and only servicing every two years now it's well out of warranty?

Hi, not really surprising, caravanning now is a very expensive upkeep and holiday . J. L.

I only do ours every two years, the insurance doesn't require it every year.

The engineer I use seems to have plenty of work. The day he serviced mine and my lads he serviced a motor home (habitation) same day, all vans within a three mile radius.

I would still have a damp check done at least once a year whether by myself or an AWS technician.

AWS guy I know is not putting prices up in 2025, good move be or bad move 🤷‍♂️but I guess they could be a realist with market conditions 🤔

I do my own damp checks, and with my low mileage, happy for a brake check every 2 years.

As a matter of interest, what would one regard as high mileage for a caravan in a year? Also as a point of interest although a car over a distance of 100 miles may brake X number of times, would the caravan perhaps be braking (X x 3) or more due to the ATC kicking in? Not an engineer so do not know.

This year the caravan will have covered approx 5k miles. I consider that above average for the majority who don’t caravan all year. High mileage for me must be greater than 10 k.


Probably 60% of the mileage was motorways ,the brakes were hardly used . The tour of Scotland involved some serious gradients where the brakes were on more than off.
I’ve yet to consciously feel the ATC kick in, well maybe once.
I can tell you 15 years on we are still on the original brake shoes! Checked annually by our AWS no issues.

Most brake linings don’t wear out more so the linings detach from the shoes when the hand brake has been left on for long periods in storage.

You mention the car. I’ve just had new front pads fitted . Last lot was five years ago.
