Another mover question (sorry)

I followed the other thread with interest but i recall a test done on movers recently and with one you were able to remove the roller and gearbox assembly thus saving the payload penalty (or at least some of it).

I only intend using it at home to turn the 'van "the wrong way" as an added security measure, so this would be ideal.

Many thanks for any advice.

Hi Stewart

I haven't heard of that one but the reduction in weight would not be very significant compared to the overall weight of the van and it is low down which is a good thing

Its also very convenient on site for locating the van/hitching up etc.

Hi Millies Dad,

We have the Truma TE on a Van that has an MTPLM of 1854 kg. The total package of the mover is 33kg. I am more than happy to give up the wifes clothing allowance for the nover, and I am sure she is, now she does not have to guide me back to hook up.

I can't believe how simple it is to move the van to the car with pin point accuracy. We have a narrow road and I found I could turn the van to point it nose first onto the drive without to much difficulty. Ok it doesn't turn on a sixpence but it would on a half crown. I honestly think I would not have considered buying a twin axle van without this aid.

Millies dad,

There was a thread on Riech movers, where the heavy drive rollers were replaced with aluminium fluted ones, and in order to this the gear box assembly was removed and then replaced.

Many thanks for all the replies.

Frank, How nice it must be to have a good lady who only needs a 33kg clothing allowance! :)

John G, it wasn't so much the weight issue (though any extra allowance is always welcome) more that I intend to use the mover to turn the 'van around when at home so the hitch faces the house. If you can then remove the mover it's another hassle for would be thieves that may make them not try in the first place (as they'll have to drag it out first to hitch up!).

Thanks also to the others - I new i'd seen a test somewhere and it is obviously the MM plus that stuck in my mind. Has anyone any news of how good this one is? Just one other thing i've just thought of, could i (or anyone else) pick up a spare mover remote and use it to move someone else's van? Waht safeguards are there, do i really need to remove it for security?

Thanks again.

Stewart

Hello Millies Dad

Having read your thread, it seems that you are considering a rather expensive solution, when I think ther could be cheaper one.

So far you have only refered to motor movers, which are chassis mounted. These cost rather a lot, and even with teh removable gearbox and rollers, you would still have some dead weight of th reaction beam left on the van.

This sound like a good case for considering one of the hitch mounted devices, which provided the ground is level and firm, may well provide you wil all you need. - lower cost and totaly demountable so no reduction in payload when towing.

Hi John, thanks for the suggestion.

I tried one of these - the Mista Shifta 3. The company were fantastic and the guy who came round to demonstrate was very helpful. Unfortunately we have a grass verge and the drive is gravel (though quite compacted) and the shifta couldn't cope so i'm afraid a mover is the only option.

I know it is an expensive choice but again if it prevents the scum from getting my pride and joy i think it would be worth it.

Hello again,

I understand your difficulty, at least you had the benefit of a demonstration, which showed one of the weaknesses of the hitch mounted devices. However if you ground had been hard and flat, then Mr. Shifta could well have been the answer to your problem.

May I also commend Mr Shifta for demonstrating thier product, which I know is a durable design, but under your conditions it was not suitable.
