Another newbie question

Walking around a caravan accesory shop today, I was bewildered by the variety of pegs available. Metal and Plastic screws (do you need a drill to install these?) Triangular section steel, big nails apparently. as well as the more recognisable (to an old camper) steel hooks

How will I know which I need?

Good solid rock pegs for hard standings and good quality plastic ones for soft ground and then of course some normal ones for inbetween. Failing that leave the awning at home! (I wish!) Oh and a good solid walloping stick.

Agree with Martin, in the end you will have a collection of every type availible about 20 of each!!!

Out of curiosity, as somone who'se only used an awning twice so is still new to it, why do awnings need a variety of pegs? If the pegs that do hard-standings are good for that, then are they also therefore OK for softer ground, so all you need is big manly pegs which will cover all types of ground?

A thin wire nail peg that goes in rocky soil indeed goes in soft sand with the minimum of effort; trouble is the awning in a wind can pull it out even easier. Soft ground needs a large section peg, hard ground the best you can hope to get in is a wire nail.

I too have a varied collection although the metal screw pegs are just about knackered.
What you do need is a very easy to use "peg extractor". I find the claw hammer works very well.

I give it a tap with the walloping stick and use the pliers if the extractor doesn't work. Also use a couple of different walloping sticks for different situations and ground types.

If it is a screw peg on hardstanding, take it out with a drill. Some hardstandings are like solid concrete and getting the pegs in seems to be getting increasingly hard work. It is definitely not because we are getting older.

rock pegs work everywhere. On grass or soft ground put them in at 45 degrees and they will hold as well as plastic. Only one tyep to carry.

I use screw in pegs on hardstanding and soft ground. Dont buy them from accessory shops though, much to expensive.

I buy these screws and these washers
Works out at £20.00 for 100 or 20p per peg.
I use a battery drill or hammer to put them in, and a battery drill to take them out. At that price i can afford to bend a few!

Just tested the links above, and they dont go to the right page for some reason, but they are 200mm M8 zinc plated coach screws at 7.54 for 50. and M8 x50mm mudgard washers at £5.35 for 100. I'm sure you will find them on the web site if you are interested
