An expensive service - tyres

The caravan has just had it's second service, all okay but a nail was found on the edge of the tread (not repairable) and also discovered that despite the caravan being 2 years old the tyres are just over 4 years old..... Rather than just change the damaged one I opted to have both done considering the age of them. The only ones I can get locally are £90.70 each. Ouch.

Apparently the maximum damage diameter allowable is 6mm, that one is nearly 10mm and only the middle 3/4 of the tread area. It's an odd one though as the nail is only around 2mm diameter but it's "punched" out a bigger diameter. I'm a bit picky about tyres hence getting them both replaced. Just need to let my wallet go and have a lie down now.....
 
Seems a very high price to me. Have ypu tried blackcircles.com? They quoteforfullyfitted tyres at a location of your choice. Certainly worth a look.
No way that hole is 6mm in diameter, if it was then all the air would leak out around the 2mm nail!

Look again, it's not a 6mm hole but more of a punched-inwards section surrounding the nail between 8 and 10mm diameter. In nearly 40 years of driving I've never seen one like it before. I'll give blackcircles a try, thanks
 
Lauffen are a budget brand of Hankook. Nankang are an established make from a company founded in Taiwan, and when I did off roading several members of the group had them fitted to their Land Rovers.

My local depot who fit my Blackcircles tyres use a gauge to “measure” the hole. If the gauge can be pushed in then the tyre cannot be repaired, as further reaming is then used to prepare the hole for the repair plug, which is then vulcanised.
 
I had a fail for tyres as well. Decided to replace both and was quoted £89 each locally plus fitting.
Went on line and bought These having checked with my tyre place that those tyres were suitable. Tyre place charged £20 to balance, fit and dispose of the old ones.
So far after 300 miles towing the caravan feels more stable than before, as for longevity talk to me in 4 years.
 
Does everyone buy tyres for their caravan based solely on price?

Like car tyres, I prefer to rely on comparative tests and brand reputation.

Is longevity relevant, does anyone do enough towing miles in 5 years to wear out a set?

No, but not everyone has the time to carry out extensive research. If caravan manufacturers are happy to sling on any old unheard of make, replacing them with a known make can't be any worse.

Not solely on price but it does play a part since I don't have money to burn.

I make my own mind as to what's good or not.

3000 miles a year I would expect them to be fairly worn after 5 years.

I'd be surprised if a caravan tyre was "fairly worn" after 15000 miles (3000 x 5). After all, they're not subjected to conditions that are anywhere near as severe and conducive to wear as a tyre on a car. I do about the same annual mileage with my caravan and after 6 years they are still showing 5mm of tread. Nevertheless, I'll get them replaced before the next test, though, as 6 years is the maximum legal here in Germany if you want to tow at 100km/h. (There's no age limit for tyres if you stick to 80km/h).
 
That nail looks like it might have had a round head that has worn the away at the damage.
My last two caravans both Coachman both came with Hankook Vantra tyres.
Last year I changed to GT Radial vàn tyres.

Caravan tyres are rarely stressed to any serious extent, its not as if you are going to be hammering down an autobahn at 90-100 mph for hours at any time, or cornering like Lewis Hamilton whilst towing is it?
So my view is to buy middle of the road tyres, with the correct load and speed rating from a reputable manufacturer, such as Nankang, Kuhmo, etc. Theres no way I would buy premium tyres like Michelin or Continental for a caravan as its simply unnecessary expense.
When running motorhomes I never fitted "CP" tyres but always stuck with "White van man" tyres which again had the correct load and speed rating. In well over 20 years, of motorhomes and caravans, and many thousands of miles I have never had the slightest issue with tyres other than them ageing rather than actually wearing out.

Noticed you changed your name to old man, how many aileses do you have 🤔
 
My caravan having a habitation service soon the tyres look okay when we brought it last year but with it on a Seasonal site and only movement they had when I tried the Powrtouch motor mover out to keep rotating but if they need replacing the caravan engineer can sort it for me .
