I tow with a petrol Subaru SJ Forester XT auto and with its 250 bhp and good torque it manages the 1300 kg caravan and fully loaded car with ease. It has a good kerbweight and dependant on how the future develops we may think of a higher spec two berth caravan up to 1500 kg. Knaus Starclass or the new Adria both come in around 6.7m with an excellent payload, not the paltry payload of some UK higher spec vans.

For 25 years I never towed with anything else and I've always towed at or close to the towload limit. Only my current car is a diesel, but only because there's only one car in the family now and diesel makes economic sense when all the mileage (about 15,000 annually) is done with just one car.
