A complete offside, but apparently Tesco do the cheapest Dental Insurance around - I'm going to check them out, as I have some very expensive work needed! (and unlike health insurance I don't suppose it can refuse to cover previous problems, or else only one of my teeth could be insured).

Hi Jo-Anne

I am retired but Val still works part time, Rioja needs to be concerned about his age. That's just an observation on some of his recent posts.-) We are comfortable in our retirement albeit earlyish retirement. I just felt that we are being seen off with all the add on costs of caravanning. A letter from Toyota dropped through the door this morning " your 12 months free cover with the RAC has expired " You need to pay

hi frank

in answer to your original question I think the answer is probably no, because of the :- (blame somebody else and make a claim mentality imported from the u.s.a)it would be daft not to insure, however that does not mean you have to be ripped off by the insurance companies either. get your cover note and look at what's insured and for how much then negotiate a new price depending on the risk involved ie:- a 5% discount on a premium of

Just a little more to this thread posted by Kenneth

" Most companies are pretty inflexible with their terms and conditions, I have to pay for Europen cover and other features even though my caravan is on a seasonal pitch in the UK, and is stored on the same site during winter. It never leaves the site "

That's my point I read on one Insurance company site that

"Caravan theft is an increasingly real and frightening issue with Police Forces and insurers estimating that over 3,300 tourers were stolen last year.

What we don't know is stolen from Home ??

What security Device was fitted ??

Stolen from Gold Award Secure Sites ??

Stolen from CC or CCC or CL/CS sites or Commercial Sites??

Now That's over 60 caravans a week, what the hell happens to 60 stolen caravans every week ??

I accept caravan insurance is OTT but can you take the risk not to have it? I also agree that a lot of the extras should be optional, we never leave the Uk but we get European cover whether we want it or not. We have just renewed our Policy with the CC using the 5C's policy, yet the strange thing ias we dont get a discount for storing the van in a CC compound. As for the cost

One observation I would have it to say how much the policies of different insurance providers vary. When i first bought my van I took out insurance with a widely advertsied company who promise to be the cheapest. Their policy sounded fine but when I took the time to read the schedule it was almost worthless. For instance the van was covered for fire, but not if the source was anything connected to your caravaning activities such as cooking or heating. The awning was covered but not for wind damage, and had to be locked in a cupboard when not in use. And the wheel lock had to be fitted as soon as the caraven stopped moving, for instance even at a petrol station.

I think good insurance, although expensive, is vital and needs to be built in to the cost of your van. having said that you'd be better off saving your money in a pot than gambling with the cheap, policy of the company I have discussed. I currently pay
