Aquakem Blue or Green

I was reading the caravan club "site book" and I recall seeing that you have to use biodegradable toilet chemicals on their sites. To me that means the "green". But I have read some sites state only blue can be used as the "green" clogs up their systems.

Can somebody explain the difference and which I should use, or should I even take both ?

Thanks

Hi,

Both Blue and Green break down the toilet waste and deal with the smell.

Green has always been a "biological" solution, helping the natural breakdown of the waste. You need to change this every 3 or 4 days - otherwise it runs out of "power"

Blue was based on formaldehyde, and was incredibly effective but also very toxic, so years ago it was reformulated and is now free of formaldehyde. Lasts longer in the waste tank than the green - 5 days at least.

Aquakem Natural is their new dry powder biological waste tank additive - just open a sachet and pour into the tank. Lasts 3 or 4 days like the Green.

What do we use?

We still have some Blue and will use that up, but in "Camping Sport De-Wit" (Holland) I bought a tub of both Aquakem Natural and KemDirect - two similar but competitive products. Paid around Euro 6 for 30 sachets of each and we'll try them this summer.

More importantly, formaldehyde kills the bacteria in fosse septiques (cess pits, reed beds) and stops them functioning.

Not too many sites or homes in the UK use these but they are prevalent in France.

The posting by Joyce has been removed for three reasons.

1.It was incorrect in the application of where the Blue and Green chemicals are used.

2.It contained information relating to two companies which she has no right to publish anything about what they are doing or not regarding trade business.

3. It was a blatant advertising stunt for a product which she has a vested interest in promoting.

Hi Mod 2

Very sorry I did not mean to go against any forum rules.

A little confused as, is this not blatant advertising that Darren posted some time ago and his posting was not removed.

I did not specify that I sell any product I only put down my opinion and advised what I know is correct.

Hi we have been using them for a few years now and find then great. we have used them in Italy and France in very hot temps and found them better than the liquids. if you keep them in the container or takeaway tray they are great. i sell these on ebay for 25 scahets for

Surely the difference is one of visibility.

Saying you have something to sell is one thing - and that may or may not be acceptable, but promoting something without saying that you are financially connected is just plain wrong.

adding fuel to this :(

I have memories of someone last year whenever this subject came up mentioning some wonderful granules that could be added to the top tank too - and I'm not 100% certain at all but I got the impression that if we wanted further info we could contact the person concerned

Thanks for your answers, but I still don't know :

1. Which of the green or blue is bio-degradeable ? (I know Robert said green is "biological", but that doesn't mean bio-degradeable does it ?)

2. Which can be used on any caravan club site ?

Thanks

Hi Rubix,

Both Blue and Green will break down naturally in the environment - that is they are biodegradable.

The "biological" types from Thetform (Green liquid and Natural dry powder), Kemdirect (Dry powder in sachet), and others, which use micro-organisms to munch the toilet waste are considered best if the caravan site employs a septic tank.

Thetford Blue and Green are both biodegradeable and both can be used at Caravan Club sites. The CC used to have a specific club site rule requiring the use of formaldehyde based fluid but this requirement has been dropped in response to pressure from members and Environment Agency.

In the UK, all types of toilet fluid on sale should be ok with any type of sewage system.

On the continent some sites ban fluids which contain formaldehyde but neither Thetford does.

Thanks Robert and Roger.

That has cleared that up.

The "green issue" in the caravan club book must have referred to older chemicals I think.

Thanks again

As a campsite owner we have banned the disposal of blue chemicals as they will destroy our septic tank. They have lots of nasties other than formaldehyde which are not very good for you.

We used to have a separate tank but a few years back the regulations changed and the water authority would not empty the tank. The only alternative was to get a specialist disposal company who were going to charge
