Hi David,
Good blog as always, excellent pictures. Sorry to hear about your incident in Rome, I had a similiar thing happen to me on the Paris Metro a few years back. I must admit it made both my wife and I a bit paranoid for a while, we still take extra care when visiting cities. We are looking to do a trip to Rome next year which makes this blog even more interesting and helpful.
regards,

Thanks for the kind comments. I have been a bit surprised at how many people have had a similar experience. It has certainly altered our view of what we do in future. I suppose you never will stop someone who is really determined but I will try and not put all my eggs in one basket in future!

So sorry to hear your bad news. We went to Rome last year (Nov) although staying in hotel at the back of the trevi fountain which we would recommend.
It was packed there late in the day at definitely at night.... heard all the stories.

So hubby and I never went out with cards or anything just enough money in our pockets.. When we did take cards it was one each which we kept separate. and in the shoulder bag buried under all the stuff we carried
I have to ask why you had your passports and driving license with you as you didn't need them ?

I see nothing strange in carrying a driving licence, I have mine with me at all times.
Our passports are kept locked in the safe I have fitted to the van.
I am afraid that pickpockets are very common in every major city in the world and you need to be on alert everywhere you go, after all, we do walk around with a big sign saying "Tourist", what with cameras and all the rest of the gear we carry around.
Just take care and have a great time, that's what holidays are for.

wonderful blog dave well worth the read.At this moment i am sitting in the sun, well thats a lie sitting in the shade actually as its 33 degress here in a village called pieve in tremonsine 400M above lake garda. to be fair have spotted women of the night and day for that
matter on all roads around the lake, and basically its something not new even here in the northern reaches of Italy nevermind Rome.
as for pick pockets not uncommon to find them up here either including them using the boat services from venice train station to st marks square. its fair to say if your in a crowded place, keep one hand on your vallubles...again brill blog..

Hi David
Thanks for your blog and the warning of the Metro. We visited Rome yesterday and plan to go back again tomorrow.
We are at Roma Flash right now, sitting under the stars and drinking wine outside the bar...it's a hard life.
