Average speed cameras

Can anyone expalin to me if an average speed camera is designated to one lane. You sometimes have 3 lanes with only two cameras. Do the two cameras cover all 3 lanes?. I have read/heard elsewhere that a camera is only licensed to one lane, but I am not sure if this is true. They are proliferating at an alarming rate, so it would be good to understand the actual law relative to them.

One camera is for one lane only,so if you see 2 cameras and 3 lanes one lane is not monitored.

You could be in the inside lane then move to the middle for the next camera but you dont know if you have gone through the same pair of cameras as they can only pair over the distance and not use the mulitple cameras.

It like russian roulette if you want to speed as you just dont know the pairs.

Why should you want to speed?

I don't know but i've never seen anything like them for keeping a steady traffic flow at a set speed!

Much better than the fixed cameras IMHO

Timbo - the actual law is that if you speed, you run the risk of getting caught!!!!

The info that cameras are not licenced cover more than one lane was changed last year so that is even less chance of evading the law unfortunately.

I am not claiming to be holier than thou, but if you see a camera and you then try to find a way to avoid capture then, IMO you are pushing things too far.

Lets set a few things straight here.

Average speed cameras are being used in road works for a reason. The health and safety of those people fixing the roads.

Why should anyone wish to speed through a road works zone anyway?

I'm no angel by any means and will use the full capability of my car as and when the road is clear of obstruction and weather conditions permit. After all at 70 Mph the engine is only doing 2'750rpm of it's 6'000rpm limit, so that gives you an idea of just how fast I could go if so desired.

I think the average speed camera is a great idea, it has finally brought some sensible driving standards back where road works are in place.

The only down side is, I can see a lot more cloning of number plates coming along.

Steve L.

I never said i want to speed but people do,cruise control and speed limiters are the best things ever invented for situations like this.

To add to the cloned number plate debate, average speed cameras cannot read illegally spaced plates and non std font plates.

Good post indeed steve, and having worked alongside speeding traffic, imo the cameras are justifed, but why are they needed overnight, or at weekends when it is quite obvious that there is no work going on?

How often do you see mile after mile of cones, and no activity at all? Its very frustrating.

Recently on the M4 one of those plastic policemen cars pulled out and slowed all the traffic to 40mph, for a distance of almost two miles, then abruptly pulled onto the shoulder behind a lorry, leaving us all wondering what the hell we were supposed to do now!

I don't condone speeding, and try not to do it, but if limits and restrictions appear to have no purpose, then it becomes a bit like crying wolf, doesn't it?

The paperwork needed for change in speed limits means that once the limits are set then they will be in place until the end of the works. it is not realistic to change the limit twice daily / weekly.

Hi Emmerson, it could well have been a "rolling road block" slowing traffic to allow the stricken lorry to be got to the hard shoulder. It is much safer to slow traffic a long way before an incident than to allow it to charge on and then have to come to a sudden halt.

Thank you for taking the time to reply Zafiral. Just to put you in the picture, I just wanted to know what the situation was. I do not speed in the average speed lanes, but I am inquisitive by nature, and because I did not know I simply asked the question, as I was sure I would get the information off this forum.

Why should you want to speed?
John L, why do you assume I wanted to speed. I dont as it happens, but I do like to know stuff, surely it is better to understand these things. If we all had your attitude, no-one would ever ask a question in fear of being patronised.

Timbo

Sorry for the slight preach!!

One interesting one near me is a set of average speed cameras that were setup just before Christmas with camera 1 in a 60 limit and camera 2 in a 50 limit!!! Have they measured the two distances to give a legal average between the two points or do they take the higher one? Who knows!!!

Over the last two weeks signs by each camera have appeared saying 'Camera not in use'. I still feel it is best not to risk it so stick to the limits, I just have to get up a couple of minuites earlier. The average speed of some others cars has shot up recently for some reason!!

I travel regularly down the M1 between Junc 30 and 21. There are roadworks between Junc 28 and 25 where there is a 50mph speed limit. I get in the inside lane I travel along at 50mph. Why is it I am passed by HGV's, vans cars some doing in excess of 70mph.This section has these average speed cameras.

Hi , Mikey, I think you may be wrong re- illegally spaced plates and non std font plates. a couple of years ago I was sporting both front and rear plates that were illegally spaced and non std font ,and I went to Liverpool on business ,7 days later the letter fell on the mat , camera caught me out ,points and fine!!

Hi Folks

Only just seen this post. the average speed camera is not used for road works. There are these cameras dotted about on normal roads....

but I agree it's stupid to speed through road works you might damage your car!!

Yes, It should have said not used just for road works.

I;m suffering very badly with hand to brain co-ordination lately. he he

Just a comment to add on the subject. The introduction of average speed cameras was planned here in Germany, but stopped on the grounds that the first camera would be taking a photograph of every vehicle, regardless of whether it was speeding or not. This was tantamount to suspecting every motorist as a potential speeder. This was declared a violation of human rights and the plan was dropped. Cameras may only be used in Germany when there is justifiable reason for suspecting that the law is actually being violated.
