Our touring caravan is sited all year. The awning area is paved so we dont have any worrys about killing the grass. We have never bothered with a ground sheet as we've never really needed to use our awning as anything more than storage. But now we have a baby all this will change. We will need to use the awning in the evenings as the baby will be in bed in the van. Also, she will be crawling / walking this year so i'd like something safe for her to play on.

Are we better off getting a proper awning carpet or just getting a bathroom carpet from B&Q? Which is cheeper? What are the perks of proper awning carpets?

From experience I would say forget a carpet and buy some lino instead. Easy to clean and does not harbour germs etc. If you are near Birmingham I can recommend a place.
 
Although I agree with Ian that lino is a healthy option to carpet you may find that a crawling/toddling baby may sustain bumps and bruises from the hard surface. When my children were tiny (twins!) I invested in several bath mats with waterproof backing. These can easily be put into the washing machine/tumble dryer and can be laid on top of the lino making tumbles less of a problem.

Toddlers are also 'drawn' to the steel pegs holding the awning in place. I would purchase some tennis balls, make a nick in the top and ram them over the steel pegs. Make sure they are tight enough so they cannot be pulled out easily.

Ann I found your response rather strange as how would a baby sustain bumps and bruises crawling around on lino inside an awning? Secondly we have our awning pegs on the outside of the awning so the baby would not see them if it was crawling around inside.

Our Serona does not have a problem and is a happy baby. Actually safer for her to crawl around the awning on the lino than at home and please don't take offence because the answer was not meant to offensive but rather a query.
