My van has 3 awnings, porch, half and full and I will be putting one up this weekend for the first time. Any tips available for putting it up?

When I bought the van the seller was very deaf (it was a comical transaction lol, lots of sign language and shouting) and said something about needing more attachments to secure the full awning to the van - any idea what these would be?

Only way your gonna find out what extras you need are to try putting it up.

If its ya first time putting the awning up, make sure if you have kids/pets, they are occupied with something else. Things can get a little heated when trying to put an awning up for the first time!

When we got our awning ready for our first trip, we put the awning up at home and labelled all the poles so it now only takes minutes to erect.

I have no desire to be PC but as someone who has spent the last 30 years bringing up a profoundly deaf person I find your quote 'A comical transaction ' most objectionable and hope the mod has the decency to remove it.

Sounds like fun!!

Were are you going? It might be worth comming to watch.

Why should you get advice. We all have to make a fool of ourselves with awnings.

Sorry for the lack of T.L.C. Been there done that and have worn out the Tee shirt.

HI

We also put our awning up for the first time on the last bank holiday weekend and OMG what a going on everybody was proberbly sat in there vans having a right good laugh as me and the misses put it up,down,up,down and eventually up it took an absolute age but now we have also marked which poles go where cos the instructions were a nightmare.

So now hopefully i will be in the caravan one day laughing myself as someonr else struggles to put up there awning for the first time and when i haved stopped laughing i will unlike people around me the first time will go and offer a hand.

all i can advise is put it with plenty of day light left cos its even harder in the dark and have fun doing it.

Oh and have the larger chilling for that celabratary drink when you have finished GOOD LUCK

In reply to tony, and his comment about Gary's posting, as a BSL translator, and working with the profoundly deaf, I have no problem with what he posted, and have, very often, ended up in what can be described as comical situations, and thats with KNOWING sign language.

Chill, it descibes the problems hearing people have when confronted with a language they do not understand, and more importantly, most deaf people dont understand BSL either, but opt for ESL, and ,with a lot of TV programmes having signers, (usually in the bottom right of your TV screen),deaf people cannot understand THEM, and use Subtitles instead.

I presume by ESL you actually mean SSE (never heard of ESL)the comment made is to use the stereotype of deaf people and while you may have contact with the profoundly deaf via work believe me it is a world apart from living with such a person, having run for 25 years a caravan club aimed at families with deaf children I suggest I can speak from a stronger position of strength than yourself.

Anyway I apologise to the original poster for taking over his post .

Oh yes..... I remember my first time with the awning, pouring with rain and windy. I had no choice but to get on with it as the dog sleeps in there. Someone, if you are lucky, may offer to help you.

As for the comment about the deaf person, big deal. We all have our crosses to bear. Remember the film See no Evil, Hear no Evil with Gene Wilder? I doubt there were many offended by that. Bloody hilarious.

The only tip I can give that I have found to be of real use is to load the awning beading into the rail fron the front of the van, it makes it a hell of a lot easier than when you do it from the back as you dont have the problem of a vertical rise with a right angle turn at the top. Best of luck

hey peter thats a good tip you sent we always load from back and many a time it comes out the groove. fortunatley we laugh at everything so it gets us through another good tip is to have a pre cooked meal in oven as by the time the awning has been put up other than a stiff drink your not in the mood to start cooking

regards fran and den
