Awning rail and cleaning

As per title what is the forum preferred method of cleaning the awning rail and keeping it free from debris? Would a stiff paint brush work and is there a recommended lubricant.

I only use my awning once every year - but that is for four months during the winter. After I've taken it down I push through the awning rail a long length of polyethylene tubing. It stays there until I arrive in Spain in November when I pull out the tubing + any creepy-crawlies, shoot in a squirt of Asda's furniture spray every 10" or so, then thread through the awning cord. The furniture spray contains silicone which allows the awning cord to move easily. The poly-tubing is coiled and put away till next time.

Toothbrush or just a test tube or small bottle brush then spray with furniture polish containing silicone or the silicone spray from the people that make other essential toolbox spray.
