Awning rail

Our Coachman VIP is two year old next month and we have had this problem since new. The front section of the awning rail for the skirt is too narrow to allow the skirt cord to go in. WE have tried a Dorema skirt and a Vango skirt. I have contacted Coachman who say this is not a warranty claim as all awning tracks are manufactured to an industry standard. So why are all the other awning tracks ok, including the rail for the skirt to the right of the door ? Our friend had the same problem on his new Coachman van bought the same time as us. He opened his up with a spreader, but it made an awful mess of the paint as the rail is painted. Coachman told me if we or our dealer opened it up they would not accept if any damage was done. At our first service our dealers said it was an issue they had taken up with Coachman to no avail at that time. It's due in in a months time and I really want to get this sorted. I just wondered if any other Coachman owners had had the same problem - or even maybe any other makes.

On the assumption you have not had any form incident that has damaged the rail and you reported this problem to your seller from an early point in your ownership, the seller is on notice to resolve the problem. The fact you have been told by the dealer there have been other similar issues with other caravans, and the dealer has stated they have lodged a complaint with the manufacturer gives strength to your position under the Sale of Goods Act (SoGA) to have the fault remedied.

Write to your dealer (and to your finance provider if you used one) tell them all you know about the problem, and the information you been given from the dealer, tell them the goods are not fit for purpose because of the difficulty of using the awning rail, and ask them to start repairs as soon as possible as required by the SoGA.

SoGA repairs do not require permission from manufacturers, and are nothing to do with the manufacturers guarantee. The are your statutory right.

I suggest you do an Internet search on The consumers association, money saving experts or other well respected sites for information about SoGA and it's October 2015 revision to the Consumer Rights Act.

No, no accidents or anything. My husband is going to the dealer to have a chat about it before we take the van for service (less than a months time). If no joy then I will get back to Coachman. After all, the van has a five year warranty and replacing a short bit of awning rail is minor, compared to what the van cost.

But it does mean the dealer sold a faulty product, which is in breach of SoGA, so surly they should face the music. Its up to the dealer to sort their contract out with coachman not you.
