hi whats the general rules about putting an awning on both sides of your caravan

It totally depends on the pitch size as to whether it is allowed or not. On the main Clubs the pitches are not big enough. Perhaps a 5-van site which has more room may permit it. Good idea for winter vanning to keep the aquaroll in. 😉

we going on a forest site later in the year and just wondering about using one side as a bedroom and the other as general use

occasionally we used two awnings when our daughter turned up. mid weekend. it was a small porch one that fitted in a clear space on other side, to be used as a sleeping compartment. [2 berth van] while leaving the main awning as was.
must say it worked very well. although sometimes we had to pay double awning fees [if there were any] on site. for the days it was up. it is also a good idea to make enquiries of the site when booking. we have never been refused but as Sir WC has said there would only be a problem. if the site had narrow pitches.
although if you tell them, chances are they would put you on a corner plot or end of row .

I agree with Colin, you need to ring the site and ask. C&CC can accommodate this on some sites by taking a larger pitch but you pay extra and need to make sure the site can do it.
