B-B-Q gas hook-up?

We have a caravan with a Truma external gas supply for a b-b-q. The information on installing/using it is scant. Is it easy to setup? If so, how is it done?

Hi,

It's pretty easy, but you do need to consider a few things as well.

You should have been supplied with a matching bayonet gas connector - that plugs into the external gas point and makes a snap-on / snap-off gas tight fitting - or maybe you need to buy a connector if the supplier was a bit mean.

We use industrial versions of these connectors for quick connecting gas supplies to refinery process analysers at pressures way above those found in caravaning (200+ psig) - so no worries there.

The open end of the bayonet connector is fitted into a length of thick walled rubber piping and secured with jubilee clips. The other end of the rubber tube is connected to the BBQ.

Easy.

Except - the rubber tubing is a trip hazard - you may only be able to buy a short length of rubber piping (between 1 and 2 metres) - and the location of the external gas point may not be convenient if you have an awning.

So just check where the BBQ will end up and think carefully about what could go wrong (BBQ and alcohol) if the BBQ fell towards the caravan or awning - is it far enough away for safe operation?

Not wishing to muddy the water too much, but after my caravan was serviced in january i noticed that the jubillee clips had been left off our gas pipe from the propane bottles. I asked the dealer why and they clearly advised that jubille clips should not be used on rubber gas pipe as it provokes the rubber to perish at an increaserd rate.Under "corgi" type legislation they were not allowed...any thoughts ???

A new one on me as well. My 2003 bailey caravan was supplied with a jubilee clip securing the rubber gas hose and still is. I just change the hose every 12-18 months or whenever I notice any wear and tear.

The only other fastener I can think of for rubber gas hose is crimped fittings but personally I don't see what bthe difference is.There are loads of temporary repairs on pipelines under a lot more pressure with holes in them using neoprene rubber and jubilee clips so no changes for me.

Ann mentioned a Truma external gas supply - so if you have the Truma fitting - take a look at the the Truma UK web-site first of all. www.trumauk.com and navigate to the gas technology / BBQ point page.

If you have the Calor external BBQ point - then a look at their web-site. www.calor.co.uk and naviagte to the caravan miscellaneous fittings

There are pictures to help you identify the style of coupling.

If you take a look at the Caloe web-site you'll see a variety of worm drive (jubilee) clips for securing rubber hose for sale.

It could well be the case that thick wall tubing doesn't need additional securing, and that many people don't know how to fit and correctly tighten jubilee clips.

I found that the thick wall tubing tended to pinch as it was tightened with jubilee clips so i took them back off and tested the uncliped pipework for leaks as it was very tight to fit in the first place, no leaks where found with the pipe just pushed on but for peace of mind i clipped the pipe with two tie wraps (wire ties)at each end which had a much more even spread of force around the pipe.

Never really gave it a thought untill this thread but maybee this is why the dealer removed your clips ?.
 
For Ben, This type of connector is used extensively on hydraulics and also on air lines in garages etc.

If you look in your local yellow Pages you should find a number of companies listed under Hydraulic Engineers. These people will know the fittings you need, they can also supply you with hose if you need it.

I have the old system of gas regulators so I use these connectors on each of my regulators so I can change from butane to propane say, in just seconds.

With reference to the comments on jubilee clips, your local engineer will be able to fit the hose with crimped connectors for you

My husband is alays extra careful when setting up the bbq so I don't think that will be a problem. He will only be using the Truma 'van connector when we go away with the porch awning. No doubt, before using it, it will be longest piece of piping allowed (I believe 2 metres) and it will be well away from the van, car and everything else on site.

Hello Ann, I use 3m of hose with no problems. I have assumed the restriction on lenghth is because of a loss of pressure, which I haven't experienced. If I am wrong, I am sure somebody will say. Also gas hose usually has a date stamped on it for replacement.

George,I can understand your enthusiasm for Jacksons I have used them since they used to operate from the front room of their house in the village,they are excellent and have most everything but their prices went up when they moved premises but you still get a discount for membership of the clubs.
 
Am Corgi registered with LPG qualification and have not heard of not using jubilee clips.I use eared clips as they are tamper proof,am on refresher at beginning of September will ask instructors.
