Took van for it's annual service, have been told it has damp to the front corner, needs a new front panel. As van is only 4 years covered by warranty.

The delema we have is..if it goes back to Baileys have been told they will want it for a least 6 weeks! The dealer has said we could have it done by someone they use, who will want it for about 2 weeks. What to do for the best.

On one hand I want Baileys to do the work, but on the other do I want to miss weeks of caravanning.

How long does this sort of job take?

welcome advice please.

Sorry that was a bit short.

I would have it returned to Bailey as they have all the correct workshop facilities and wil ensure it is fully dried aout and any damaged timber replaced, which takes time.

Also they, having done the repair will give a non quibble guarantee on their work, which in the event of further problems sould be much easier to get something done.

Bailey built it and it leaks! Will their repair be anymore watertight? Don't forget if it's being repaired under warranty then it's only guaranteed to the end of the original warranty.

Is your van stored out of doors Tigger. I only ask because my Bailey is the same age as yours but It is stored under cover. I wonder if this stops it getting damp and so i'm concerned that I may have a crack somewhere but it will not show up as damp unless it rains all week when we are away somewhere.

i would say if the dealer doesnt have any trained staff or facilities themselves to repair it, i would certainly want it to go back to factory. the reason for this is, who would be responsible for the repair should it go wrong. and if the repairer is not bailey approved, should it go wrong again, bailey wouldnt want anything to do with it.

i have my own body shop for these reasons, with factory trained technicians, and experienced cabinet makers. this is so i dont need to send caravans back to factory, waiting for weeks for their return.

Hi, yes our van is stored outside. On the bright side (if there is one) it has happened while under warranty.

My Bailey Ranger had to have a new front 2yrs ago due to stress cracks, it went back to Baileys and was back in two weeks not counting the time I had as a runaround to an approved agent, the seller of the van didn't do that kind of repair but it was through them that it went back to Baileys. So you never know, it may be less than the time stated.

This is an interesting one.

By rights the SOGA legal warranty is the sole responsibility of the seller, If warranty work is required (such as this repair for damp)the seller is the contractor, and may subcontract the work to another company (including the actual manufacturer)

Under normal contract arrangements, the client should be offered the names of the businesses the seller intends to use for the repair and the client has the right to veto any sub contractor they feel is unsuitable.

In this situation, the client should be returning the caravan to the seller with instructions for the seller to use the manufacture for the repair.

It is then up to the seller to arrange all delivery and return of the caravan to the repair site. The client should not endure any costs for the return or collection, as these would have been unnecessary if the caravan was not faulty.

As the caravan is faulty, the client should be able to claim compensation for any real losses caused by the fault.(evidence is required but might include cancellation fees for holidays booked that have been cut short or would have coincided with the time the caravan is in for repair)

To retain full protection under SOGA only deal with the seller.
