Bailey Senator wheels warm

I find that at the end of a journey the wheels on our 2008 Bailey Senator are warm to the touch, even when the last few miles have been uphill. I jacked the caravan and found that the wheel (only tested one) spun freely so brakes do not seem to be binding. The van was factory fitted with an Alko ATC, so I wonder if this might be causing the problem. Alko say they have not heard of such problems - so does my dealer. We are heading for the Pyrennees in a couple of weeks so want things sorting out.

Has anyone else experienced this?

youll find this occurs with everyones car, caravan whatever.a lot of heat is generated through the tyres ,braking etc.its normal.

Another opinion for whats it worth:

I agree with klarky that tyres and drums normally run "warm".

If its a tyre that concerns you and its hot rather than warm then its cause for concern and indicative of under inflation.

If its the drum then you can expect that to be quite hot if you had been running down hill for example [as opposed to your up hill].

If a shoe is dragging even a touch then things get stinking hot and very obvious.

I would not expect the ATC to be active enough in an inherently stable unit, however I have not yet got mine fitted.

I would be relatively comfortable in the knowledge that if things were wrong they would be very hot not "warm"

Klarky

Thanks for your comments - I am reassured up to a point in that the wheels are certainly not hot. Perhaps I am just paranoid, but with a 2000+ mile trip ahead of us I think I will let the dealer take a look - just in case!

I have ATC fitted and it has activated once as I turned right at a mini roundabout. As I exited the van went from turning right to turning left in quick succession which the ATC interpreted as a 'snake'. Believe me, you certainly know when it kicks in.

Hi

Next time you have a run in the car, after stopping check your car wheels. On the whole they should feel about (not an exact science) the same temp as your caravan wheels.

That should put your mind more at rest.

Have a good trip.

I'm no expert at this, but if the caravan tyre/wheel diameter is less than the towing vehicle (which it normally would be?), it will take more revolutions to do the same distance as the car. Therefore the tyre will be warmer than the car. Or am I barking mad and need a holiday??

Thanks to all who have commented. I have also had advice from Alko to the effect that some warming is considered normal, so I will now have more confidence in setting out to the Pyrennees. Obviously I will check tyre pressures beforehand and hope to get to a weighbridge to ensure we are not over the 1500kg MTLM. Hope I have thought of everything!
