Hi All,

I have a cover over my tow ball but, most times when I take the cover off I need to emery a little rust off the ball. Question is it possible to buy a ball made out of SS that won't require the cleaning everytime I want to hook up ???.

Thanks Val & Frank

Hi Frank,

No.

Corrosion resistant (stainless) steel doesn't have the same mechanical properties (strength, fatigue, crack propagation) as the steel used for the tow ball.

That's why we have a detachable tow-ball - just unlock when you've finished towing and keep it somewhere warm and dry - then just click in place before the next trip. No rust or corrosion problems, just wipe with a cloth.

And rather than use emery paper, try one of those abrasive green kitchen scourers - it'll remove the rust without removing any steel.

And don't worry about cleaning all the rust off, the friction pads will get the last traces for you, like the brakes on your car.

Hi Big Roy,

Does that mean that every one who has a permanent tow ball mut now have a detatchable one added to be legal? This sounds typical Tony Blair type Legislation, and no doubt he's planning a tax on it as well.

Maybe a detachable towbar in addition to a fixed one?
