last march myself and the better half decided to buy a new affinity caravan , after paying a ton of money to be asked , do...you wish to purchase a new battery as it does not come with one. What use it would be without one I said yes. So the kind gentleman who sold us the caravan(.....for a ton of money....) was kind enough to fit it for us before driving our new rig away. When we bought the rig we bought 3 years service along with the van . 2 days ago it went for its first service....shock gasp horror they said the battery was broke, no good, dead.....I said it can not be you guys fitted it when I bought the van . Have you the receipt? No I answered, then the guy came in and said , look take it home see if it charges up if not bring back and we will see what we can do. So I've had it on charge I'm reading 13.4v with no load . How long do I leave it to know if it's holding charge .also how low should it go to know it's still ok or not

A lot of issues in your post. Welcome to the Forum Keith.

This will explain the voltage aspect for you.

Ensure when measuring you have fully disconnected from the charger.

You need to establish why the battery went completely flat. It may have damaged the cells being fully discharged for a period but you may be luck and hopefully it will reserect.

Did you switch everything off before putting the caravan into storage?

There are a number of good electrical experts on here who will say a lot more .
If the battery is faulty go back to the Dealer .

Are you seriously saying they deny supplying and fitting it?

No they are not denying it , they just said I need the receipt. Also if I disconnect the battery my alarm will not be any use . And then it will effect my insurance. So damned if I do , damned if I don't, I just thought with it being a new battery it would hold for just the alarm
Hello dusty dog , should of maybe started off with that 😭 😔

Welcome Keith, I can state if it is the Sargent alarm, this will flatten it's own battery and the caravan one in about 6 to 8 weeks.
Hopefully recharging the battery MIGHT get it back to life.

Use a Smart charger such as CTEK, NOCO, Ring etc. They can help rejuvenate a low battery. Sometimes Aldi have a suitable one in stock.

If they sold it to you, they should still have a record of the purchase. Secondly if it was paid for separately, it will show up on a bank statement and that is good enough proof. Amazing that the person cannot remember selling the battery to you!

I'm sotty to pour cold water into this thread, but this case is perhaps a little more tricky that it first seems. On the assumption the age and supplier of the battery can be established, the next issue is why did it go flat.

If the battery went flat becasue it is faulty, then that should be fine but as the thread has progressed I'm wondering if you may have made a rooky mistake, and allowed the battery to discharge whilst in storage.

It is reasonable to expect a new owner of a battery to understand it should not be allowed to stand fully discharged for extended periods, and as such the owner should take steps to ensure it is either fully disconnected from a caravan, or provided with a means to keep it charged.

If you allowed it to fully discharge and stand discharged, that is not normal usage, and it might invalidate your warranty or any claim under the CRA.

It makes you wonder what happened at the handover when new?
