The battery reader in my old swift caravan is struggling to get beyond the 'yellow' section. I thought that the battery should charge up when on hook-up. Have I misunderstood this, or has my battery just seen better days, and i need to get a new one?

Emmy, use a multimeter at the battery terminals to determine if the charger is working or not. You should get betwwen 13.5 and 14.45 volts with the mains on and charger switched on.
Turn the mains off and check the battery voltage, should be 12.5 or above if good.
Leave the battery off charge for 24 hours and recheck voltage, if it has dropped below 12.5 then the battery is in need of replacement.
