Hello Marcus
The word 'transformer' is often misused to describe a battery charger or power supply as used in a caravan, and elsewhere.
There are important technical differences between a transformer, a battery charger and a power supply. And as such they are not interchangeable.
A transformer is a single component item of equipment. It can only be used on an AC (alternating Current) supply. It has the ability to change the voltage and current between its input and output, but it always remains AC.
A Battery charger has a specific job, in that it provides a source of current to recharge a battery. Whilst the output will be a DC (Direct Current) it will not be smooth or have well controlled voltage and it might damage any sensitive equipment that is connected to the battery.
A Power supply is more complex than a battery charger, and it has some other components in it that ensures the output is smooth and has a well controlled voltage.
Both battery charger, and a power supply will probably use a transformer as part of their internal workings, but these days they may not resemble the conventional heavy iron cored devices common a few years ago.
