We are off on our third trip away, this time for 10 days in the new forest with no electric hook up, we've a 85A battery, will this be enough to power us for 10 days? there are just two of us.

How long is a piece of string?

In other words, it's an impossible question to answer without knowing what you are going to be using on 12 volts. Are you going to be using a TV? Satellite?

We've been away on non-EHU twice now and I've managed to ascertain that our 113Ah battery will last us 5 nights average and we have two 113Ah batteries so we should be able to last 10 nights and that's with a TV and satellite. An 85Ah battery wouldn't last us.

Hi Legsmainiac

We won't be using a tv and will mainly use the site facilities.

You might be pushing it a little but as long as you use the more efficient lighting (ceiling domes not downlighters unless LED) you should be OK.

Using the site showers and other facilities will help as the pump will be your next/biggest power user.

Make sure any fans, taps, awning light etc are firmly off.

If you talk nicely to the wardens I am sure they will give the battery a boost if required.

Other options are extra battery, solar power or generator.

Have a nice time.

We regularly stop at non hook up sites. An 85 amp battery should give you about 10 showers and lighting to last. The water heater and fridge will obviously be on gas, as will the heater should you need it.

TV ? No, make your own entertainment and avoid the box for a while.

Generators are, IMO, a curse.

They're not a curse imo - and that's the only opinion I, oersonally, care about.

Used sensibly (and courteously) they are as much a part of caravannning as the towball. With a modern caravan all that's required is a field, a tap, and hole to chuck the porta-potti contents into. Everything else, showers, hot water, TV, DVD etc comes courtesy of the van and its equipment. (possibly the only exception to this would be a launderette for long stays) What is the point in paying big bucks for a well equipped modern van and then paying again to duplicate the facilities?

But you don't have to pay to "duplicate the facilities". Lots of CL's and small 5 van sites don't have facilities yet do have EHU.

Genny's are very frowned upon by a lot of caravanners, it seems.

Each to their own though. ;-)

It does depend on how the Jenny is used.

Why people who are are on non electric for the weekend have to fire it up at 8 in the morning?

Hi all

Just to let you know, we've just returned from our 10 day trip to New Forest, and the battery never came out of the green, we only used site showers 3 times and used a camping lamp for night time, really impressed, won't now have any qualms about not being on electric hook up.

Glad it all worked out and you had a great time. I was a tad concerned with our first trip away (albeit a short one, not 10 day) on non-EHU but after you've done it once, you get to know how your battery and equipment fares and will do it again no problems. Caravanning non-EHU gives you greater freedom in selecting sites that have no EHU so opens up more possibilities. Plus it saves a few quid per night.

That said, not sure I could go non-EHU during the winter. It wouldn't be any cheaper anyway since what we save on non-EHU pitch prices, we'd use in gas.
