Do you need to have a battery fitted whilst connected to mains on a pitch ?

Depends on the van, some can work without a battery, some need one.

It is better to have a battery in circuit as it acts as a smoothing unit, and also, if you have a power failure, you still have lights and other 12v appliances working, like toilet flush, fan, taps.
