I've had my 110ah battery on the optimate charger for 43 hours and the diode is still showing red indicating a weak battery - we only purchased the caravan a few months ago so don't really know the history of the battery - what's your thoughts folks - should l leave it on the optimate for another 24 hours ?

Just a thought, is it a sealed battery, if not, have you checked that there is electrolyte showing above the plates by looking down through the filler plugs.
Do you have a multi-meter to measure outputs?
Another 24 hours on the optimate won't do any harm.

Sounds like either the charger is not working, some or all cells are low on electrolyte, or a cell is shot.

Tip: if being charged the battery should be ever so slightly warm.

Also can you identify the battery age?
43 hours is way too long to charge.
As suggested you need to measure the current voltage output. Roughly you are looking for either side of 13v.
11 or less suggests a dead or dying cell.
Also see what reading you get when the caravan is connected to an EHU.

I've probably got this all wrong,,however,,,

I used an Optimate 3 on my motorbikes for years, still got it actually and it worked well,,,but I've just had a look at it and on the info plate on the back it says it only puts out 0.6 of an amp

Or are there motorbike Optimates and car Optimates,,,

My caravan battery went "Dead" on me just back from a tour of Europe, trying to motor move it onto themdrive at dark o'clock in the morning. I thought the battery was a gel cell one, no it was a wet cell one and It was dry , my fault ,,, cooked it. My fault.

Come to think of it, I bought my Optimate specifically for motorbike battery, truth is I cannot remember if there are carmotorcycle options. I really do need to check, but the one I have will (eventually) get a tired 12vcar battery up to 'functioning' (albeit slowly and assuming the battery is not fubar).

Time to get the Optimate manual out and check, I think you may have a very good point pensioner.

You can do better than that. An own brand 115Ah leisure battery from Halfords is £95 with a two year guarantee.

The battery is a badged Yuasa - one of the better battery makers.
