I just bought a 2008 abbey vogue 2. I was told an electrician had connected the water pump directly to the battery (2004 battery) This works fine. However, nothing else works on the battery and there doesn't seem to be any charge going to the battery either(12.74v tested on battery). Everything works when plugged into 240v except the water pump. The control panel isn't working either and only 1 v DC at the control panel plug. I checked all the fuses and they are okay. I've changed the control panel to one made by apuljack engineering still nothing on panel. Anyone any ideas what I should check or do next? Thanks. Fran

There is probably a 20 amp inline fuse between the battery and the power supply, if that has blown you will get some of the symptoms you describe - nothing will work on battery but will work on EHU as the power supply is giving out 12v, also the power supply won't charge the battery as it charges through the fuse.
Trace the wiring from the battery to the power supply and hopefully you'll find the fuse. If it's not that, I think you will need to call in a professional.

I don't really understand why (or indeed how) someone would connect the water pump directly to the battery. It needs a control circuit (on/off switch, pressure switch or tap switches) so they may have moved the control circuit feed. That could mean that it is no longer protected by a fuse so really needs investigating further.

Thanks for your reply Beardy. Sorry, I should have said the pump is connected to a switch from the battery. I did find a 20v fuse which looked like it was coming from the supply to the battery and that seems fine. I think as you said, I'll need to seek professional help. Should I seek out a dedicated caravan specialist or should a qualified electrician be able to sort would you think? In the meantime, I'll need to get a car charger to charge the battery I think. It's my first caravan so am new to all this. Thanks again for your help😊

Hello Fran,

It's always difficult to diagnose a problem like yours over a forum, especially when it's known that none standard modifications have been made. There is nothing to beat being able to carry out investigations actually at the caravan by someone who understands how caravans should work.

I concur with Beardy, It reads as though the feed from the caravan to the caravans control panel and charger battery has been lost, but how or why we simply cannot tell for certain.

There is clearly a problem because at some time in the past, the water pump has been rewired direct to the battery, but why?

If your not confident with electrical wiring, you need to employ someone who is.

Even 12V DC battery and wiring can be dangerous if not managed and installed correctly, there is plenty of current available to get hot enough to start a fire where a connection may not have been made correctly.
