Going to france next year in our 2001 van.Question is, can we use the fridge on the 12 volt setting for the journey down then top the battery up while we are away with the inbuilt charger or do we have to have the extra socket on the tow bar fitted?
The 12v setting for the fridge only refers to a connection to the towing vehicle (engine running) so yes, for the fridge to run on 12v you will need the second (grey) 12s socket fitting to your car. The fridge has no 12v link to the caravan battery.
Tony has said it all very succinctly. You do need a relay between the car battery and the fridge so that it is only on charge when the engine/alternator are running to avoid flattening the car battery.
You can of course use gas for any non hook up stops en route.Towsure etc do kits for DIY
