As some may now be aware (previous post) i'm a firefighter.

Had a job yesterday involving two things close to my heart !

A caravan had flipped over on a straight road trapping a dog inside.

The terrified pooch had it's paw trapped between the van body and the road, i think it was a big husky type dog.

The dog was released with an injury to it's paw.

Being a caravan geek i did notice the car had a brand new tow bar and gold type tow ball with a AKS 1300 stabiliser on the caravan, don't know if this contributed to the crash.

Anyway, whilst it is legal to travel with pets in the caravan here is one reason NOT to !!

Regards

John

Some people we know were travelling home and the same happened to them. They had two dogs in the caravan but they ran off, never to be seen again.

I can't even begin to understand why anyone would want to leave their dogs in the caravan while travelling. Lack of common sense I suppose.

Just the thought of it happening to us if our dogs were stupidly kept in the van turns my stomach over.

No,LB,it doesn't bear thiking about does it.

It's on a par with leaving the dog in the car on a redhot sunny day.

Dave.
I am glad the dog escaped with only an injury to its paw, I agree that putting a dog in the van is rather silly, ours a border collie has the back seat to him self but is restrained by the harness,

It not a lack of common sense, its a lack of good sense!

John,

If the new towbar had a "gold type" towball & the van had a AKS stabiliser then this is probably why it flipped - the two are incompatible. Alko sell a specially extended neck towball as the standard type does not give enough clearance from the bumper for the AKS stabiliser to hitch to securely.

As for the dog in the van, I hope the driver was prosecuted.

I am amazed to read here that it is legal for pets to travel in towed caravans - it definitely shouldn't be! Can't imagine how the dogs would survive without being severely traumatised in a bouncing, swinging trailer van, plus the strong possibility of things falling or rolling around.
