Is anyone willing to give me their opinion on the the merits of memory foam mattress toppers compared to airbeds. We currently use airbeds but find them a bit too warm at times - in fact almost uncomfortable,and was considering swapping to 3inch memory foam.

I have had a memory foam topper for some years and i find it very good , but it too can get warm and hold the heat. Its also a bit more difficult to turn over as you sink your body shape into it. I could never get on with air beds
I also have in the house a Tempor mattres which when you first get in feels strange but your body heat soon lets you sink and that also holds your body heat in it.

We made sure we bought a high density memory foam topper which seems to almost eliminate the issues you describe above.

Where do you all store these memory toppers, they seem quite bulky, at least as bulky as double sleeping bags ?

We have used a 4" thick feather down topper with great success for 10 years now. I discovered this option at the Scandic Crown Hotel in Edinburgh. They guaranteed a full refund if you didn't get a good nights sleep. We've never looked back , nor are they too warm.
Storage wise it either goes in the loft or stays in the caravan if we are doing a lot of over winter touring.

As we have a fixed bed, we leave it on the bed at all times.
