Right, now this could just save a 45 year-old marriage!!

We've just spent most of the afternoon changing our beds.

Bottom sheets, top sheets and duvet covers. As one of us has very limited movement, and the other has a long-standing back problem, this is a daunting task.

Like lots of people, we use sleeping bags in the caravan, so I suggested that we buy two more SBs to use in the house.

You'd have thought I'd suggested selling our grandson into slavery!" You can't do that", says she. "Why not?"says I. "Because you don't use SBs at home" says she."Why not"? " Because you just don't". End of conversation.

Can someone please tell me why we cannot use sleeping bags, with inner liners,at home, thereby making bed changing a ten minute job, instead of taking all afternoon, and causing frayed tempers?

Or is it just me?

It is just you. Women have a certain set of rules, and they are not negotiable. For example the bedding has to be changed weekly, even if to you, it looks, and feels just fine.

However, you could try a compromise, and suggest 2 single duvets for the top. We have stayed in posh hotels where the double had 2 single duvets and actually found it quite comfortable.

As for sleeping bags. Well! What would the neighbours say??? They might think you are squatters?? After all when you are camping you are not expected to be quite so clean as at home, and therefore it is allowed.

SL, I realise that the female mind works on a different wavelength to the male one, but the logic escapes me.( now that was silly, using the words "female" and "logic" in the same sentence!)By using an inner liner, cleanliness wouldn't be an issue, as it can be changed as often as the sheets are now, and easier to wash.

As for being thought of as squatters, most of our neighbours think that anyway, as we're away so often!Btw, we use single beds, so it would be two separate bags.

I still think it's a good idea!!

I can only suggest retiring to the 'garage/greenhouse/potting shed with a bottle of whisky and contemplate the vagaries of a universe where a supposedly male God decided to include a female species into his calculations. You will never come up with a logical answer, but the whisky will at least taste fine. Once you are 'well oiled' then even the thought of bed changing will not seem so hazardous.

Not too long ago I mentioned to Lady Braykwynde the idea of using sleeping bags and using the seats each side to sleep on so as too save making up the bed each night. I wish I hadn't mentioned it, she snapped my head off.

In retrospect I think I would have been gutted if she had agreed. That's male logic ... heh! heh! heh!

Well, I'm with Mrs emmerson on this one. SLEEPING BAGS! Dear me. Sleeping bags are for young tenters.

Duvets and nice squigy pillows are the way to go.

Get yourself off to Dunelm. Buy one or two duvets, with nice brand new duvet covers and matching pillow cases.

Honestly, men.

Oh, and it'll be your responsibility to make the beds up and put the bedding away in the morning.

But I have done ever since I retired, Lisa, cos I'm always the last one up!
Well, why don't you try a bit of reverse psychology and get up first?

You could make her a nice cup of tea and bring it up to her. She'll never twig. Well, maybe she will.

I wouldn't even use sleeping bags in the caravan - they're for people in tents without proper beds. I'm with Lisa on this one - lovely lightweight goosedown duvet, cotton cover, egyptian cotton sheets and pillow cases in the caravan - and at home too. I would have thought you'd less chance of saving your 45 year old marriage in a sleeping bag unless it was a very roomy one!!!! :)

I'm not surprised Mrs emmerson pooh-poohed the idea!!

Do you get egyptian cotton sheets and pillow cases from Asda?

If so we've got them :O)

I only ever used sleeping bags when I was a Boy Scout ( a Hell of a long time ago) and even then found them sweaty, and hard to get out of.

I agre with the duvet scenario, but use 2 duvets, not sheets. One duvet is high weight, the other low weight and depending on the temperature decides which goes to top or bottom.

You can get cotton sheets in ASDA but I suspect for the 'Egyptian' variety you will have to go to John Lewis, or equivalent. We usually wait till the Sales and get 40% discount or more.

No, we got ours in Egypt! Some of them anyway, when we visited in April! They're lovely, and don't take as much ironing as the ones you're often sold here!

Hang on a minute! I didn't intend to start anothe r range war!

We need separate beds because of Herself's disablement and my back. Because our cottage is very small, one bed has to go against the wall, so it has to pulled out to strip it. That's problem one.Problem two arises when we come to put on the clean duvet cover. Herself struggles to do it, and I can't bend enough to help. By the time we've finished we're both knackered, so that's the day down the pan! A sleeping bag thrown onto the bed against the wall, that's problem one solved. A sleeping bag thrown on my bed, that's problem two solved. Neither of us is in pain or knackered up, so we've gained a day. What's wrong with that?

As for Lisa's idea that I get up first, well because Herslf can't stay in one position too long, she gets up around 4.00am.

Now, much as I love my little lady, there are limits!!!

PS.sat at breakfast this morning, she said " I wonder if we could get SBs in Argos"

Watch this space!

Another query for the ladies: When we decided that we had to go for twin beds, we had to wait for two weeks as we needed different grades of mattress. When they arrived they were of a slightly different pattern, so she sent them back. They had to match, she said.Other than when we change the sheets, the mattresses have never been seen. Why did they have to match?

Hi emmerson

I fully understand your thoughts and I agree that when one bed is against a wall it makes changing it more difficult. I have this problem at home and thought that a small cupboard handle screwed to the base in a place where you usually grip it would help to move it.

I too love my egyptian cotton sheets and lovely soft pillows but I agree sleeping bags would be easier if not usually the done thing. If you use sleeping bags in the caravan, then why not just TRY them at home and see what you and Mrs Emmerson think. If you find it works, then tell her that you will buy her a VERY NICE quality sleeping bag, and a lovely bed throw or bedspread which could go over the whole bed (and bag) in the day. These make any bedroom look nice, gives extra warmth if you need it but you both have had a 'say' and hopefully another 45 years.! Keep us informed!
