Belling Gas Oven - Problem or not?

We have a small Belling gas oven in our '98 Coachman Mirage. While away last week we tried to use it in anger for the first time (we only got the van in the summer).

To my uneducated eye, and even thought the oven knob has (un-numbered) graduated markings round it (presumably from cool to red hot?) it only seemed to be either on or off; no visible difference in the flame size or anything.

Also, it took an age to cook anything (at least twice the recommended time stated on the products we were cooking)

I'm more than happy to accept that this is a 'feature' of caravan ovens and revert to stove top meals, but thought I'd see if anyone experiences anything similar and knows of a tip or trick for us to try to improve things?

Cheers,

MM

The gas oven in our old caravan was hopeless for cooking meals, just as you describe. We don't have an oven in our current van, so we use one of those little electric jobs! Not the real cheap, what I would describe as pizza warmers, but one that is thermostatically controlled, and can be used just as a normal oven can, and will hold at least a chicken and some roast potatoes for four! It works a treat and runs on the site electricity, which we have anyway, so saves on gas too!
