Hello,

We're off down to Tenby next month and have been trying to find the best caravan-friendly route down there from Preston, Lancashire....

Have any of you got any suggestions as to which will be the easiest way to get down there as the roads seem to be quite hilly and windy and not ideal for towing?

Please let me know if you've any experience of traversing from Lancashire to South West Wales.

Thank you very much

Three years ago i went to St Davids from leigh.
Went into north Wales the normal way then worked my way south more or less along the west coast line, can't remember the exact roads but they were the "main" for the area.
Went through Corwen, Aberystwyth and Aaberaeron
It was less than perfect towing roads to be honest.
I had a trailer in tow and remember thinking this could be fun with a van on the back.
Beautiful trip mind.
The only fail safe way would be the M6 and the M4, but it is the long way round, or M6 M54 to Shrewsbury then to Aberystwyth, this will bypass the Snowdonian Mountains.

M6 down to m50 and onto ross on wye from there take the A40/A449 which is dual carriageway,it becomes the A449 or rather the A40 vears off the main dual carriageway stay on the A449, and this goes down to near Newport where you join the M4 at the end of the M4 rejion the A40,at st clairs pick up the 477 i think and then the 478,or the otherway way round which takes you into tenby

I agree with Jonny and Bill. Lived in Midlands for years and have family in South Wales so can recommend the Ross route. Also towed it without problem.

Agree with the comments about M6/M50/A449/M4 etc. The roads aren't too bad, all motorway or dual carriageway until St Clears (approx 15-20 miles from Tenby). Some of the roads around Tenby can be narrow, and Tenby itself can be incredibly busy at times. Best to follow the local site directions once you've off the dual carriageway past St Clears. Nice area though, well worth the trip.

Having been born in Alvechurch between Brum and Redditch, then moved to Leominster Herefordshire and holidaying regularly to Tenby, Newquay and Blackpool, I have an alternative route that might just save a heap of time stuck in ques around M6 M5 and M42 interchanges Plus avoiding the VOSA test site at Ross which is regularly open and does target caravans as well as lorries.

Travel the M6 south then at Jcn 20 pick up M56 west bound to Jcn 10, pick up the A49 south down to Leominster. Here you take the A4112 west out of town where you will pass a Morrisons supermarket with fuel station which is the cheapest in town for fuel. After the 4112, pick up A438 to Brecon. Then pick up the A40 which takes you straight to St Clears Via Carmarthen. Then it's the A477 to Kilgetty and A478 to Tenby.
From Manchester interchange (m6 m62) it's about 2 1/2 Hrs with car & caravan to Leominster. Leominster to Tenby is about 3 Hrs.
The roads are reasonably good and you can maintain a steady 50+ mph easily. Plus you get some excellent views of the countryside rather than the arse end of a lorry. Joking apart, I have travelled the alternative routes both in car, car & caravan and truck, and I always seem to make better time on the main roads as opposed to motorways. Also because there is the odd bend and juction to navigate, I find it a lot less monotinous and tiring.
Have a great holiday.
