Wouldn`t worry about the bleach.

I bung up the outlet and pour down a strong, very hot bleach solution, leave for 20mins and flush.

There are lots of different products on the market that are supposed to clean your pipes but some can leave a smell. If you use a product like Kemdirect descaler/cleaner it will clear you pipes of the bad smell but not leave any other smell in its place. It is also not harmful to the pipes in any way.

Harry,

Smell from a waste water system is usually caused by kitchen waste (grease in particular) or bathroom waste (soap residues and hair).

These are best removed (dissolved) by using a caustic (alkali) cleaner - acid cleaners are ineffective. Your fingers are protected by a natural layer of oil, spill vinegar (acid) on them and you'll notice nothing - spill a similar strength solution of caustic and your fingers will suddenly feel slippery - the caustic has dissolved the natural oil.
