We have a 2002 Pageant purchased 2nd hand fm main dealer 3 months ago and have noticed that when we flush the toilet we get lots of black bits coming out with the flush water. The tank is filled as per instructions of top tank additive / water mix. can anybody offer advice as to what the cause may be and how to get rid of these very unsightly bits. should the toilet have been flushed out and cleaned by the dealer prior to us picking it up? or how can I fix it.

thanks in advance

Pip

I had the same problem in my vermont. I didn't have a great problem and could only put it down to residue water left in the tank between trips. I didn't drain the tank each time. My tank eventually became OK. I can only suggest that you fill the tank and empty via the flush and the drain pipe and do that a couple of times. I would look at the labels of the flushing products sold to clean waste tanks although I would be very carefull in case thay could effect any sealant around the toilet. You could try Thetford they where very helpful to me when I had problem with water coming out of the flushing handle (manual flush)

I assume you're using Thetford products. They seem to have taken some chemicals out of their fluids some time ago, before then they were self cleaning. NOW, you can buy those chemicals in "Thetford Top Tank Cleaner". You can also now buy Bottom Tank cleaning chemicals.

OR change to Elsan chemicals, which have their original mix complete.

Hi Pip.

We have just introduced this year into the UK a new product from Holland called Kemdirect. A biodegradable dry granular toilet additive which can be used top and bottom and has excellent performance.

It will clear out those black bits and cure the problem completely, whilst giving you excellent breakdown of all solids, with no smell, no deposits and no staining.

Look at www.kemdirect.nl and you can come through to our English site and if you wish to know more then we can help you.

Hi Pip

The deposits are algae which grow in the top tank. All the toiletts will have them to some degree. The deposits are harmless and pose no problem to the use of your toilet. Thetfords cleaner is good as is good old milton to get rid of it. However it does tend to come back after a while.

In 9 years of caravanning, never had black bits in the water, but I empty the resevoir before leaving a site. If going to be using the van within the week, keep the residue for use next time.

Just my experience.

I used to get this quite a lot when using the Thetford rinse fluid. What I did was to drain the flush tank and give it a good rinse out then added the Elsan rinse fluid and the problem now seems to have gone.

Can't find any UK information on prices for Kemdirect. Any body got any idea. Is it cheaper than Theford and other companies?

Pip, We had same problem and solved it cheaply and quickly. 1, drain off flush tank as much as possible. 2, fill a watering can with cold water & add a good slug of milton steralising solution (less than
